Regarding post wedding showers.Can gift suggestions include contributions to a “Money Tree”?

I am the mother of the bride and they had to go shot-gun because of overseas orders and the paperwork involved. The original wedding date was in June of 2010. She got married in CA where they are stationed; no family or friends attended and she is coming home for Thanksgiving. I want to host a surprise shower with friends & family. Her registry is tiny and friends are asking for gift ideas. Would it be awful to offer the option of contributing to a “money tree”?
